Thornbury Township Announces Plans to Develop First Phase of Squire Cheyney Park

Subject to grant funding from Chester County and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Township plans to start construction first phase of constructions for Squire Cheyney Park.  The grant awards are expected to be announced in the fall of 2011.  If the Township receives the grant award, constructions would be able to start in 2012.  Click here to see a drawing the proposed improvements.

Squire Cheyney Park consists of 52 acres of Township owned land and is part of the historic property of Squire Thomas Cheyney.  The property is home to a historic barn and the former house of Squire Thomas Cheyney, who had an important role in the 1777 Battle of the Brandywine, and subsequent public service in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  The property is currently used to grow crops as a suburban area farm, and the long term plans for the property include a passive recreational, historic, and agricultural/natural use.

The Scope of work for this project constitutes the first phase of construction for Squire Cheyney Park.  The primary component of this phase is a constructed pedestrian and bicycle trail throughout the property, which will circulate the perimeter of the farming area, and connect into neighboring trail systems.  The trail will be accessed by an existing gravel driveway that will be widened to 18 feet.  Due to the historic and agricultural nature of the property, the driveway will be improved as part of this project, but will remain a stone surface.  The widened driveway would terminate at a parking area that provides access to the trail.  The second phase, which is not part of this application, includes an extension of the driveway down to the historic house and barn with additional parking and a gazebo.  Additional trail access would also be part of the second phase.

The project would constitute approximately 1.5 miles of walking trail with trailside features including wetlands, a historic springhouse, agricultural land, historic and natural educational signs, and various viewsheds. The trail route consists of two loops.  One is on the 10-acre property located at the corner of Route 926 and Cheyney Road.  The other is further south near the site of the house and barn.  The tow loops will be connected via a trail to be constructed by Orleans Homebuilders as part of the Preserve at Squire Cheyney Subdivision.   A future connection point into Westtown Township is envisioned as a crossing of Route 926.

Throughout the trail, resting areas will be placed consisting of benches and educational/interpretive signs that will describe the historic and natural features of the property.

The Thornbury Township Board of Supervisors, staff, and residents value the preservation of open space.  This park, as identified in the Comprehensive Plan and the Squire Cheyney & Waln Run Park Master Plan, is a top priority for the Township as a means to provide passive recreation that will benefit the residents of Thornbury Township.
